In September 2023, ChildFund launched a national campaign that seeks the public’s support to demand technology companies to remove from their platforms any child sexual abuse content proactively. Named #TAKEITDOWN, the campaign features a short film entitled “Monster,” which exposes the treachery of online child sexual abuse materials. #TAKEITDOWN also highlights how little is done to provide children with protection from online sexual exploitation.
American technology companies are required to report the proliferation of child sexual abuse materials once they become aware of them. However, they are not required to search for these materials proactively and are not punished for not immediately taking them down. The Cyber Tipline of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children receives over 80,000 reports of online child sexual exploitations every day. These facts became the backdrop for the launching of #TAKEITDOWN.
